Having now found yourself facing the prospect of divorce, you are possibly thinking - what do I do now? Who can I tell? What
will people think?etc. The next shock you may have to face is all those friends who you thought you could count on have suddenly disappeared into the woodwork. You may find you can count on only one or two; even family members may be evasive.
You are not on your own. There are around 120,000 to 150,000 divorces in England each year. Multiply that by two and you see that you are surrounded by countless numbers of people who are or have been in the same position as you - and they have survived.
1. You must have been married for at least one year.
2. You must have :-
Both parties must have homes in England or Wales when the petition is started.
or Both parties must be living in England or Wales when the petition is started.
or Both parties must have had their last home in England or Wales and one must be living in one of these countries when the petition is started.
or Your husband or wife must be living in England or Wales when the petition is started.
or You must have been living in England or Wales for at least a year on the day the petition is started.
or You must have your permanent home in England or Wales and have been living in either of these countries for at least six months on the petitions started.
There may be other specific circumstances that permit you to get a divorce in England and Wales.
