The Alkaline Diet And Aging Successfully

The alkaline diet is thought to provide many health benefits, but in this article I want to discuss particularly about the benefits of this diet for older adults. Why would we think that the alkaline diet is particularly valuable for individuals in their golden years? Well, part of the answer has to do with the fact that kidney function diminishes with age. And because the kidneys are the organs principally responsible for eliminating the acids produced by the foods we eat, this makes older adults vulnerable to the negative effects of a low-alkaline diet.

The primary destructive effect that I want to talk about is osteoporosis. The most common bone disease, osteoporosis occurs when the body makes an attempt to deal with excess acid by removing alkaline minerals from the bones. This can temporarily preserve your body from becoming dangerously acidic, however, at the price of long-term bone loss. Fortunately, you'll be able to prevent this from happening by adopting a healthy alkaline diet.

Like your bones, your muscle tissue can be catabolized to free alkalizing minerals. Not surprisingly, then, excess acidity is associated with muscle atrophy. And at least one study shows that following an alkaline diet might help to protect muscle tissue in older adults.

A third destructive effect of excess acid is increased danger of kidney stones. Again, scientific studies suggest that following an alkaline diet can help to stop at least some forms of kidney stones.

Together with consistent physical activity and a positive attitude, a wholesome diet will help to prevent some of the worst elements of getting old. Apparently, health problems that many individuals think of as "normal" consequences of getting old are instead caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. The good news is that if an issue is produced by a poor diet, it can be solved by a healthy alkaline diet.
