Buying shoes on the internet

By: Charlie Board

Purchasing anything sight unseen can be problematic, but this is doubly so for shoes. Sizes vary between manufacturers, and it’s difficult to tell what is going to be comfortable without trying a pair on. In a shoe shop, you wouldn’t dream of walking out with the first pair that looked good if you hadn’t tried them, and maybe a similar pair, and perhaps a half size up or down as well. Fit is extremely important in boots and shoes and a little pinch can easily become a nasty blister by the end of a long day.

On the other hand, the internet is a terrific marketplace. Extreme competition means the best possible prices for the consumer, and you can shop all over the world and see thousands of different models in a few hours. And whatever you’re looking for, someone, somewhere, will have it on sale. No need to wait until January to get a great price on those new Doc Martens you like the look of. So, how to make sure shoe shopping doesn’t miss out on the benefits of the internet?

A lot of problems can be eliminated by choosing a good supplier. Forget eBay, because most sellers won’t handle returns. Find a company with a returns policy that suits you, where you can return shoes that don’t fit even if there are no defects or manufacturing faults, and either exchange them or get your money back. In the UK there are regulations governing returns policies for goods bought online, but pick a shoe company with clear terms and conditions on their website to avoid problems. Picking a shoe supplier that does free delivery is also preferable, because sometimes it can be difficult or impossible to get your postage costs back if you return a pair.
